Lisa Smith-Batchen and her crew used an Iridium Satellite Phone supplied by Outfitter Satellite during their recent 302 mile run from Las Vegas to the summit of Mt Whitney.

"The satellite phone was really an essential piece of equipment for our passage through
Death Valley...Given the extreme conditions, terrain and lack of standard, ‘cellular’ service, we needed to have emergency communications available at all times...it was important for us to provide frequent, accurate updates to the various web sites and blogs tracking our progress.  The Iridium phone supplied by Outfitter Satellite worked flawlessly for all of our needs.  We intend on using...Outfitter Satellite for all of our events worldwide."

BEAM RST100 Remote Satellite Terminal

The RST100 Remote Satellite Terminal by BEAM provides voice, data, and messaging services through the Iridium network. Its versatility and rugged design make it an excellent choice for maritime or fixed-site use.   If you are using the RST100 to provide a backup Iridium communications system, the typical configuration is to set it up near the roof with an external mast antenna on the roof.  Your command center can be connected to the RST100 using standard phone cable (max 750 feet) and serial data cable (max 100 feet recommended).   An LED display indicates the status of power, satellite signal strength, ongoing call status, and message waiting.

ANALOG PHONES AND DATA EQUIPMENT:  The RST100 can be used with standard analog phone equipment through its RJ-11 port.  A serial RS-232 data port is available for data applications.   The data port can be effectively used for e-mail with free SkyFile or AmosConnect software from Outfitter Satellite.

INTELLIGENT HANDSET:  A BEAM intelligent handset can be added to provide a phone directly connected to the RST100 terminal. The handset has a built-in ring alert, and supports voice and SMS services.

ANALOG FAX MACHINES:  An optional fax adapter is available if you wish to send and receive faxes using a conventional fax machine.

ALTERNATIVES IF YOU NEED HIGH SPEED INTERNET:   The BEAM RST100 is an Iridium terminal and only offers 2400 bps internet access.  This is useful for basic text-based email and light data applications.  If you need broadband internet,  an alternative marine satellite terminal to consider is the Skipper 150 FleetBroadband terminal.   Unlike Iridium which is valued primarily for its global voice capability, FleetBroadband marine terminals offer simultaneous voice and true broadband fast internet.
