Iridium Phone Becomes Essential In An Emergency

This was going to get out so I figured I would own up to it. Last week it rained in Mexico.  We only lost three cars, no one was injured.  The [Iridium] Satellite phone was essential.   Trucks are things.  Things can be replaced.  We just built a lake and had no idea that the water was already going around the dam.  It hit right when we started to leave the ranch.

Iridium phones also saved me in Mongolia about 10 years ago while hunting Sheep.  We rolled a vehicle and had to airlift out.  Luckily the man was not killed.

What Can You Expect from an Iridium 9555?

The Iridium 9555 provides global voice and 2400 bps internet access. The satellite antenna stows inside the body of the phone.     Iridium satellite phones are intended for outside use and a direct line of sight with the sky is needed.    Email software is available at no charge.   A universal AC charger with international plug set and a 12 VDC "cigarette lighter" charger are included. The usage rates quoted represent the entire cost of a call (except taxes and government imposed fees) for all calls to public-switched telephone numbers; special types of calling such as calls to other types of satellite phones can be higher. Compare the Iridium 9555 to an IsatPhone PRO:

The Iridium 9555 provides global coverage and is a good choice for rugged terrain because the low-earth orbit Iridium satellites continuously change position in the sky letting them "look down" into  mountain valleys.  Iridium also covers the polar regions.  Though the IsatPhone PRO offers more limited coverage, it still covers most of the globe except the polar regions. We recommend the IsatPhone PRO for marine applications and locations for which a geostationary Inmarsat satellite is at least 20 degrees above the horizon.

Within the above coverage constraints, the IsatPhone PRO is superior for making very long duration high sound quality calls. The IsatPhone PRO has excellent battery life (8 hours of talk time) compared to 4 hours of talk for the Iridium 9555.

Both phones have similar data speed and are suitable for light data applications. Outfitter Satellite offers email software at no additional charge upon request.  Inmarsat broadband data terminals are available for applications requiring high speed internet access.
